Hospice in the Nursing Home setting

Federal legislation which permits hospices to provide care to terminally ill residents in nursing homes was mandated by Congress in 1986. However, hospice care in the nursing home is a new concept in New York State. While nursing homes provide quality care for all residents, the services of a certified hospice program have not been available until now. Under this program, the hospice and the nursing home enter into a joint arrangement, utilizing the expertise of both providers to best meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of dying residents and their families.

The Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS), which represents the vast majority of NYS hospitals as well as almost 100 residential health care facilities and over 70 hospital-based home health agencies and hospices, believes that such a collaboration benefits all parties involved: the nursing home, the hospice, government, and, most importantly, the resident and their family.
