NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The unemployment rate soared to a nearly five-year high in August, topping 6%, as employers trimmed jobs for the eighth straight month, according to the latest government reading Friday that came in weaker than forecasts. The big surprise in the report was that the unemployment rate rose to 6.1%, the highest level since September 2003. That's up from the 5.7% rate in July and 4.7% a year ago. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast the rate would remain unchanged from the July reading. The government doesn't want Fannie Mae of Freddie Man to go broke, but it better start thinking about what happens if the rest of us do.  The latest data on the job market paints an ugly picture:  The unemployment rate shot to a five-year high in August and payrolls are being cut at an alarming rate. etc.. etc.. According to the Labor Department, the jobless rate rose from 5.7 percent in July to 6.1 percent in August, and employers cut their payrolls by 84,000 in August, the eighth straight month of declines.  That pullback was fueled by employers' worries about the economy and their own business prospects.  So far this year, 605,000 jobs have vanished.  The economy needs to generate more than 100,000 new jobs a month for employment to remain stable. etc.. and the news story continues...

MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian navy squadron set off for Venezuela Monday, an official said, in a deployment of Russian military power to the Western Hemisphere unprecedented since the Cold War. The Kremlin recently has moved to intensify contacts with Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American nations amid increasingly strained relations with Washington after last month's war between Russia and Georgia. During the Cold War, Latin America became an ideological battleground between the Soviet Union and the United States. Russian navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said the nuclear-powered Peter the Great cruiser accompanied by three other ships sailed from the Northern Fleet's base of Severomorsk on Monday. The ships will cover about 15,000 nautical miles to conduct joint maneuvers with the Venezuelan navy, he told The Associated Press. The deployment follows a weeklong visit to Venezuela by a pair of Russian strategic bombers and comes as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez — an unbridled critic of U.S. foreign policy who has close ties with Moscow etc.. and the news story continues...

Stockholm, Sweden - Germany became the latest country to move to allay fears about the financial meltdown, enhancing a rescue plan for Hypo Real Estate AG and guaranteeing private bank accounts as European governments scrambled on their own Sunday to save failing banks. etc.. etc.. At the same time, Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme said that France's BNP Paribas SA had committed to taking a 75-percent stake in Fortis NV. etc.. etc.. The deal came after two days of closed door talks between the Paris-based bank, Fortis and government authorities in an effort to restore confidence in the company before markets open today.  In Iceland - particularly hard-hit by the credit crunch - government officials and banking chiefs were discussing a possible rescue plan for the country's overstretched commercial banks.  British treasury chief Alistair Carling said he was ready to take "pretty big steps that we wouldn't take in ordinary times" to help the country weather the credit crunch. etc.. BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan - A powerful earthquake struck the mountains of Central Asia, destroying a village in Kyrgyzstan and killing at least 72 people, emergency officials said Monday. YORK COUNTY, Pa. -- The National Earthquake Information Center said a magnitude 2 tremor shook part of York County at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
