Report on the Economy

Unemployment rate climbs to 5.7 percent

By Neil Irwin  The Washington Post

Washington - Unemployment continued its long climb in July, and employers slashed jobs for the seventh straight month as the labor market continued a slow but steady deterioration that is walloping American workers. etc.... etc... The job losses are not as steep as declines suffered during the two most recent recessions, but they are part of a steady and unrelenting decline in the labor market that began in 2007.  The new data show how ordinary Americans are being squeezed from almost every direction: Food and fuel are more expensive, homes are less valuable, credit is harder to get and it is increasingly difficult to get a job or a raise. etc.. and the news story continues.....

Consider This:

Death of a journalist

Russian authorities are calling the point-blank shooting death of a journalist Sunday an accident.  Judging from the circumstances of the death - and Russia's growing intolerance of the press during Vladimir Putin's rule - that seems unlikely.  Magomed Yeyloyev was picked up by police in Russia's North Caucasus region and then dumped on the road with a gunshot wound in his head.  Police said an officer shot him accidentally after he grabbed for the officer's gun.  Yeyloyev ran on online publication that reported on widespread allegations of abuses, abductions and killings in the region. etc.. and the news story continues...

Jobless rate soars to 6.1%

Unemployment surges to 5-year high as employers cut workers for eighth straight month, bringing '08 job losses to 605,000.

By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer

Last Updated: September 5, 2008: 9:03 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The unemployment rate soared to a nearly five-year high in August, topping 6%, as employers trimmed jobs for the eighth straight month, according to the latest government reading Friday that came in weaker than forecasts. The big surprise in the report was that the unemployment rate rose to 6.1%, the highest level since September 2003. That's up from the 5.7% rate in July and 4.7% a year ago. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had forecast the rate would remain unchanged from the July reading. There was a net loss of 84,000 jobs in August, according to the Labor Department etc.. and the news story continues...

Canadian Arctic Ice Sheet Nearly Size of Manhattan Breaks Off

By Adam Satariano

Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- A 19-square-mile (50 kilometers) ice shelf attached to an island in Canada's northern arctic for thousands of years has broken from land, another sign of the effect of global warming, scientists said. Nearly the size of Manhattan, the 4,500-year-old Markham Ice Shelf separated from Ellesmere Island in early August and is now floating in the Arctic Ocean, etc.. etc.. etc.. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change last year said temperatures in the Arctic are increasing at almost twice the global rate. Mortgage mess may be followed by credit card defaults

Rise in unemployment, consumer debt might be signs of a coming storm.

By Rachel Beck  (AP)

The government doesn't want Fannie Mae of Freddie Man to go broke, but it better start thinking about what happens if the rest of us do.  The latest data on the job market paints an ugly picture:  The unemployment rate shot to a five-year high in August and payrolls are being cut at an alarming rate. etc.. etc.. According to the Labor Department, the jobless rate rose from 5.7 percent in July to 6.1 percent in August, and employers cut their payrolls by 84,000 in August, the eighth straight month of declines.  That pullback was fueled by employers' worries about the economy and their own business prospects.  So far this year, 605,000 jobs have vanished.  The economy needs to generate more than 100,000 new jobs a month for employment to remain stable. etc.. and the news story continues...

Russian S-300 missiles 'would ensure Venezuela's oil security'

MOSCOW, July 24 (RIA Novosti) - Russian S-300 air-defense missile systems would enable Venezuela to fully ensure the security of its hydrocarbon resources, a Russian military expert said Thursday.

"Needless to say, should S-300s be delivered to Venezuela, they would effectively strengthen its defense capability, and it would not be easy for its possible adversaries to punish the country by striking at its oil fields," former Air Force commander Gen. Anatoly Kornukov said. He added that as an oil-rich country Venezuela had to protect its natural resources. etc.. etc.. In 2005-2006, Venezuela bought more than 50 combat helicopters, 24 Su-30MK2 fighters, 12 Tor-M1 air defense missile systems and 100,000 AK-103 assault rifles from Russia. Current contracts are worth about $4 billion, according to various sources. etc.. and the news story continues and ends with this statement.. Future deliveries may include Amur-class diesel submarines, Il-76MD military transport planes, Il-78 aerial tankers and air-defense missile systems.

Russian navy ships head to maneuvers in Venezuela

By VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV – 7 hours ago

MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian navy squadron set off for Venezuela Monday, an official said, in a deployment of Russian military power to the Western Hemisphere unprecedented since the Cold War. The Kremlin recently has moved to intensify contacts with Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American nations amid increasingly strained relations with Washington after last month's war between Russia and Georgia. During the Cold War, Latin America became an ideological battleground between the Soviet Union and the United States. Russian navy spokesman Igor Dygalo said the nuclear-powered Peter the Great cruiser accompanied by three other ships sailed from the Northern Fleet's base of Severomorsk on Monday. The ships will cover about 15,000 nautical miles to conduct joint maneuvers with the Venezuelan navy, he told The Associated Press. The deployment follows a weeklong visit to Venezuela by a pair of Russian strategic bombers and comes as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez — an unbridled critic of U.S. foreign policy who has close ties with Moscow etc.. and the news story continues...
