People across Europe and the north-eastern United States were on Monday still coping with the effects of winter storms that brought sub-zero temperatures and record snowfalls that left large areas in both continents blanketed in a coat of white. Flights were cancelled, roads closed, and train service cut back from the Balkans to Britain, from Spain to Ukraine, amid poor visibility caused by winter storms and snow.  The East Coast of the US was meanwhile digging out after a massive storm had dropped an icy blanket as deep as 60 centimetres in some places. Schools in Washington DC and other cities along the eastern seaboard were closed. etc.. etc.. In Russia, Moscow's heaviest snowfall for December 21 in 100 years backed up traffic for a total of 1,700 kilometres, the Interfax news agency reported. etc.. etc.. Heavy snowfall in Ukraine brought dozens of trains to a halt and blocked major roadways, the Interfax news agency reported. The worst snowstorms were reported in the southern Odessa, Luhansk, and Mykolaiv provinces, where accumulated snowfall reportedly exceeded 30 centimetres in some areas. etc.. etc.. The snowfall of at least 40 centimetres was the deepest in the Washington area for December in about 70 years, and was also among the region's 10 deepest snowfalls ever. Temperatures were expected to rise to 40C (104F) on Tuesday, before becoming cooler. Two major Arizona roadways remained closed Friday morning after the worst winter storm to hit Arizona in 17 years took its toll, forcing evacuations, stranding hikers and prompting a search for a child swept away in flooding. The storm submerged roads in the Phoenix area and postponed flights at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. It also caused power outages for thousands of residents in Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson. etc.. etc.. Most Valley locations received around 1"-4" of rainfall over the last 24 hours. Europe cold weather kills dozens

A severe cold snap across Central and Eastern Europe has killed dozens of people in recent days, officials say.

Parts of western Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania have been hit by heavy snowfall and freezing conditions, stranding villages and causing transport chaos. Some 22 people have died in Romania, where snowdrifts blocked roads and temperatures fell as low as -34C. etc.. Eleven people died over the weekend in Poland, taking the country's winter death toll past 200. etc.. etc.. London, Jan 27 : Senior British Government lawyers have revealed that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was warned two months before the invasion of Iraq that it would be illegal to go to war without UN backing. Iran's Supreme Leader: Zionist Regime to be Annihilated

Abdel Aziz was winding up a two-day visit to Iran aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. The Southern California mega-church founded by televangelist Robert H. Schuller Sr. is selling property, laying off workers and pulling its signature TV program "Hour of Power" from some markets to offset a nearly $8 million drop in revenue. The church saw revenue drop 27 percent from roughly $30 million in 2008 to $22 million in 2009, church spokesman Mike Nason told The Associated Press. The church had projected an 18 percent revenue drop. Church leaders blamed the decline on the struggling U.S. economy. They intend to save $4.9 million and stave off further financial collapse by selling 170 acres in southern Orange County, including a retreat and wedding center, laying off 50 employees and cutting "Hour of Power" from eight of the 45 domestic broadcast TV stations that air it. etc.. The 10,000-member church will also cancel this year's "Glory of Easter" pageant, which attracts thousands of visitors and is a regional holiday staple along with the church's "Glory of Christmas" show. Mexico City - Ten people died in an avalanche of mud in central Mexico, raising the death toll from days of heavy rains to at least 30, emergency officials said. Khamenei: Iran anniversary "punch" will stun West on 2-11-2010

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday that Iran is set to deliver a “punch” that will stun world powers during this week’s 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution. ”The Iranian nation, with its unity and God’s grace, will punch the arrogance (Western powers) on the 22nd of Bahman (February 11) in a way that will leave them stunned,” Khamenei, who is also Iran’s commander-in-chief, told a gathering of air force personnel. A winter storm moving through the South could means that there will be snow on the ground in all 50 states, which has likely never happened before. Snow in Florida clinched it, according to the Patrick Marsh of the National Severe Storms Laboratory. Meanwhile, Dallas snowfall has reached a single-day record yesterday, with 12.5 inches falling within 24 hours at DFW Airport. For there to be snow on the ground in all 50 states, the current storm in the South would have to dump onto the Florida Panhandle, which just happened. etc.. and the news story continues...

Aftershocks keep fear of new quake high  (AP)

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - Hundreds of houses that survived Haiti's killer quake still stand empty even as quake victims desperate for shelter crowd the streets.  The reason is fear: Nobody is quite sure the buildings can withstand another quake.  At least 54 aftershocks have shuddered through Haiti's shattered capital since a Jan. 12 quake killed more than 200,000 people. etc.. and the news story continues...

Heavy snow blasts New York: Snowiest month in city's history

New York – Late on Friday afternoon the sun finally came out over New York, illuminating the 21 inches of snow that fell on the city as a result of storm called a “monster” by meteorologists. Around other snow-pelted areas around Big Slushy Apple, it was just as bad, if not worse. Harriman, N.Y., dug out from 32 inches of snow, West Milford, N.J., had 28 inches of snow, and Monroe, N.Y., had 31 inches. And, that’s before the drifts, which some people said were seven feet high. etc.. etc.. Winds gusted to hurricane level.  Some of the wind gusts made it feel like a hurricane. New York’s LaGuardia Airport recorded a wind gust of 45 miles per hour with sustained winds of 33 miles per hour. etc.. etc.. Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- A suicide bomber ended a series of deadly attacks in central Iraq by detonating explosives in a hospital emergency ward where victims of two earlier blasts were being treated. At least 29 people were killed and 42 wounded in the triple bombing attack in Baquba, northeast of the capital Baghdad. The first car bomb attack targeted a government office near a police checkpoint. Two minutes later, a second suicide car bomb went off near the party headquarters of former Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari in central part of the city. About an hour later, as the victims of the first two explosions were being rushed to Baquba general hospital, a third suicide bomber walked into the hospital's emergency room and detonated a bomb. etc.. and the news story continues...

BAGHDAD (AFP) – Early voting in Iraq's general election was overshadowed Thursday by two suicide bombings at polling stations that killed seven soldiers and a mortar attack that claimed the lives of seven civilians. Huge waves kill 2 on cruise ship

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greek and Cypriot officials say 26-foot waves have crashed into a cruise ship with nearly 2,000 people on board off France, smashing glass windshields and killing two passengers. Another six people suffered light injuries, a Greek coast guard statement says. It says the accident occurred near the French Mediterranean port of Marseilles on Wednesday as the Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty was sailing from Barcelona to Genoa etc.. and the news story continues...

Al-Qaida calls on US Muslims to attack America

CAIRO — Al-Qaida’s American-born spokesman on Sunday called on Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces to emulate the Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood. In a 25-minute video posted on militant Web sites, Adam Gadahn described Maj. Nidal Hasan as a pioneer who should serve as a role model for other Muslims, especially those serving Western militaries. "Brother Nidal is the ideal role-model for every repentant Muslim in the armies of the unbelievers and apostate regimes," he said. etc.. "You shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that military bases are the only high-value targets in America and the West. On the contrary, there are countless other strategic places, institutions and installations which, by striking, the Muslim can do major damage," he said, an assault rifle leaning up against a wall next to him. etc.. Gadahn grew up on a goat farm in Riverside County, California, and converted to Islam at a mosque in nearby Orange County. He has been wanted by the FBI since 2004 and two years later was charged with treason. There is a $1 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction. etc.. and the news story continues.. and ends with these statements.. Gadahn said fighters should target mass transportation systems in the West and also wreak havoc "by killing or capturing people in government, industry and the media." He recommended finding ways to shake "consumer confidence and stifle spending" and noted that even unsuccessful attacks, such as the failed attempt to bomb a U.S. airliner on Christmas day, can bring major cities to a halt. "I am calling on every honest and vigilant Muslim in the countries of the Zionist-Crusader alliance in general and America, Britain and Israel in particular to prepare to play his due role in responding to and repelling the aggression of the enemies of Islam," Gadahn said.
